Strength & Surrender: A Yoga Retreat in the Caribbean
January 2oth - 27th, 2024
with Shannah Green & Ramsay Trussell
Jungle Bay Resort/www.junglebaydominica.com
January is the perfect time to escape New England and spend a week in this breathtaking coastal paradise on the island of Dominica in the Caribbean. Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) has been nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean". The island boasts 365 rivers & streams, hidden waterfalls, freshwater lakes, hot sulphur springs, a "boiling lake", lush mountainous tropical forest. It is home to many rare plant, animal and bird species.
There is no shortage of ADVENTURES to be had on Dominica. Snorkelers rave about Scott’s Head and the popular Champagne Beach; at which tiny, warm bubbles float up from the geothermal vents, resembling a glass of bubbly Champagne. Both snorkeling sites are within 10 minutes from Jungle Bay. Dominica is also known as the Whale Watching capital of the Caribbean; more than a half-dozen types of whales and a dozen types of dolphins have been identified in Dominica’s waters.
Jungle Bay is a unique oasis for nature lovers, active and adventurous travelers, as well as for those who seek tranquility, relaxation, yoga and wellbeing. A place to wind down, to rejuvenate your mind and body in a natural environment. Jungle Bay is located on the south west coast, only 20 minutes from the capital of Roseau, 392 feet above the Caribbean Sea, the charming fishing village Soufriere and the marine sanctuary of Soufriere & Scotts Head.
The 60 tastefully designed villas are nestled within tropical trees, banana plants and flowers. The hotel combines barefoot luxury with ecologically & socially responsibility and offers an outstanding hospitality service. Everything will be organized for you: transfers (from/to port/airport), guided hikes, excursions & activities, spa treatments & massages, yoga, delicious and fresh island meals.
About the Retreat:
We will offer two yoga classes a day (morning and late afternoon), along with extra specialty classes/mini-workshops (TBD by interest & time availability). Both the morning and afternoon sessions will vary in style and format ranging from active vinyasa-style yang yoga to gentle, slow-flow classes incorporating elements of Yin and Restorative yoga, pranayama and meditation. We will incorporate philosophy discussion and mindfulness teachings into time before and/or after classes.
The yoga classes that we offer will be appropriate for all levels of students as we will offer the chance to modify or add on when appropriate. So whether you are a beginner or advanced student, we will work with you at your level to provide a week of challenge and growth. During the day, you will have the freedom to spend your time as you choose….treating yourself to a massage, napping, reading, sun bathing or going on an adventure (hiking, surfing, zip lining, waterfall rappelling, chocolate tours and more).

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT PLAYA VIVA'S ON-SITE TURTLE SANCTUARY: Each year thousands of Olive Ridley (Golfina) turtles and dozens of endangered Green (Negra) and Leatherback (Laud) turtles come to the shores of Playa Viva to lay their eggs. Over the past 50 years of commercial exploitation, poaching, and degradation of nesting and foraging habitats, six of the seven marine turtle species have been placed on the endangered species list.
Playa Viva founded La Tortuga Viva (LTV) in 2010 to protect these turtles from predators and poachers alike. Since then, LTV has safely released over 450,000 baby sea turtles. LTV is staffed by an all-volunteer team comprised of members of the local community of Juluchuca. Playa Viva supports the sanctuary by helping to raise funds for needed equipment. The volunteers patrol the beach at night to look for turtles or turtle tracks, to collect nests buried in the sand, and to bring these eggs to the sanctuary just as the mother turtle left them. The eggs are kept safe within a protected incubation sanctuary that keeps them out of the reach from the real and imminent danger of predators and poachers.
Baby Turtle Release...Olive Ridley nests take about 45 days to hatch. During this time, the volunteers visit the sanctuary multiple times throughout the day to check to see if any turtles hatched. When the baby turtles emerge to the surface, normally in the early morning, the volunteers safely remove them from the incubation pen and release them into the ocean. We invite you to join us on a night patrol with volunteers from LTV as well as the release of the baby turtles to the ocean during a morning of your stay. This is truly an experience of a lifetime.
The turtles nest year round, with turtles arriving to lay eggs peaking during the rainy season, between July and October. Due to the normal 45 day gestation period, you will still see hundreds of baby turtles released through January. We have been lucky in that you are likely to see baby turtles almost every day of the year in Playa Viva.
